IP / ASN Ownership

Understanding Ownership in RADb

RADb (Routing Assets Database) is a routing registry, not an authority on who owns IP addresses or Autonomous System Numbers (ASNs). Just because an IP address or ASN appears in RADb under a certain maintainer's records, that does not mean the maintainer owns that resource. True ownership of an IP range or ASN is determined by the Regional Internet Registry (RIR) that issued it — such as ARIN, RIPE, APNIC, LACNIC, or AFRINIC. These organizations are the official authorities for Internet number resources. If there's ever a dispute over the ownership of an IP address block or ASN, RADb will always defer to the records held by the appropriate RIR. We do not make ownership determinations ourselves.

Preventing Unauthorized Object Registrations

If you're concerned about someone else using your IP space in RADb (for example, associating it with their own ASN), the only effective way to prevent this is by implementing RPKI (Resource Public Key Infrastructure). RPKI is a security framework set up through your RIR that cryptographically verifies which ASNs are authorized to announce specific IP prefixes. RADb honors RPKI validation, and we will reject any object registrations that conflict with valid RPKI records. To protect your resources, please work with your RIR to configure RPKI properly.

Handling AS-SET Misuse

Sometimes, another maintainer may create an AS-SET that includes your ASN — even though you don’t want to be part of their set. In such situations, we strongly recommend that you contact the maintainer directly and request that your ASN be removed from their AS-SET. If you have made a good faith effort to reach out and receive no response, please contact RADb Support, and we will assist you as best we can.
